Phase two sucks.

I threw up twice already, and I barely got through the hard part. Stone had Harper crank the trainer assemblage all the way to the ceiling—which is apparently about eight stories up—dangled me upside down in a dark pseudo elevator shaft on a wire and harness thing strapped around me, lowered me a million feet a second, then jerked me to a stop a foot from the bottom.

Oh, and Harper opened up the ducts on one run and let me plummet to the mat, just because. I don’t think she’s quite ready to stop being pissed at me yet. But no way am I going to tap out in front of her. She thinks I’m not good enough for her brothers? Well fuck that—I’ll show her how tough a Covingt— uh, how tough a Whatever-My-Family-Name is, can be. Maybe I’ll pick my own last name. Like Danger. Ryll Danger. Has a nice ring to it.

Wait a minute—why do I care if she thinks I’m good enough for her brothers?

I think I’ve got duct-fever or something. I need to focus on my task at hand and forget the big dumb Daedalus Brothers.

Which isn’t easy, since the biggest one is glowering at me from over by Harper and the computers. He’s got a black eye and a swollen lip, courtesy of one or both of his brothers. And I maybe detect he’s got a bruised rib, the way he’s holding himself.

Stupid boys.

“What?” I snap at him. “I’m doing the best I can.”

“We only have another five days to get this right,” he growls. “You need to do better.”

I glance at Harper, but she’s not back to defending me just yet. Yep, still pissed. Everyone’s pissed at me.

In the distant past—like, a week ago—I might have gone off and pouted at how unfair everyone is being. Today… Well, Ryll 2.0 wants to show these Daedali what I can do. And I kind of want to know what I can do, too. How far I can go.

“Reset, Harp,” I tell her. “I’m going again.” I purse my lips at Stone. “What, exactly, is the point of phase two?”

“To accustom you to dangling from the wire,” he says.

“I got that part,” I say. “I mean, why am I dangling from the wire?”

Harper glances at me over her shoulder as Stone says, “We’ll go over the why of it when you achieve the how.”

I make a noise that sounds like I ate a cat, and the cat wasn’t happy about it. “Fine! Let’s run it!”

This time I only have dry heaves when the line slams me to a halt near the bottom of the shaft. I’ll take the win.

One other change from phase one: I get to carry all my utility belt crap in a backpack now. It’s a neat, matte-black affair that clings to my back like a baby possum to its mom. I have to find out where he gets all this cool shit. My girls would be so jealous—

Fuck. It hits me: that life is over.
